Forearm tension (co-contraction) and overly forceful movements may over time lead to pain. As piano playing involves repetitive activity, often at speed and with force, professional pianists in particular are at risk of experiencing some arm or hand pain at some point in their career.

Do pianists have strong forearms? In short, no. Many pianists don't have strong forearms. Although playing the piano involves your forearm muscles, it is not a vigorous activity enough to make the forearm strong.

Bend your hand downward and gently pull it toward you using your other hand. You'll feel tension in your forearm and elbow. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Relax and return to the starting position and repeat the stretch with your other hand.
