Panning overheads

Panning overheads

Simply pan your overhead mics hard left and right (as far left and right as they go), shut your eyes and listen to where you can picture these drums in front of you. Then pan the individual drum to match where they are on the overheads. This takes practice by the way!

What are overheads in recording?

Overhead microphones are those used in sound recording and live sound reproduction to pick up ambient sounds, transients and the overall blend of instruments.

What is panning in guitar?

Panning a primary rhythm part to one side of the mix without another part (either 2nd guitar or other instrument) producing similar musical drive and energy panned opposite to it will cause a mix to “lean” to one side, which, to be blunt, makes the music sound amateurish and distracting.

Where can I pan a high hat?

By panning hi-hats to the sides, everything that's left in the center will get more attention, simultaneously making the mix feel wider and more rhythmic. For hip-hop and electronic tracks, I like to pan hats 30–50% away from the center.
