Which string instrument is transposing?
The clarinet, cor Anglais, trumpet and French horn are transposing instruments. The note which actually sounds at concert pitch when the player reads/plays the note C determines what pitch the instrument is “in”. For each of these instruments, the concert pitch note is lower than the written note.
Are trumpets transposing instruments?
If you're writing for trumpet with anything other than percussion or voice (e.g., guitar or piano), and if you wish to specify pitch material in more than one part at a time, then you'll need to deal with the fact that the trumpet is a transposing instrument.
