What notes can be played together?

Notes that sound good together when played at the same time are called consonant. Chords built only of consonances sound pleasant and "stable"; you can listen to one for a long time without feeling that the music needs to change to a different chord.

How a note is played?

Each note gets a certain amount of time in a measure. For example, a quarter note would be played for 1/4 of the time (or one count) in a 4 beat measure while a half note would be played for 1/2 the time (or two counts). A half note is played twice as long as a quarter note.

How do you know what notes are in a chord?

Each note of the chord gets a name. The “root” of the chord is the note that is the same letter for which the chord is named. For example, a “C chord” has the root “C”, a D chord has the root D, and a G chord has the root – you guessed it – G. The other two notes of the chord are called the “Third” and the “Fifth”.

How do I find out what notes a song is in?

After listening to the song, hum the first note and try to find it on your instrument. If you have to, listen to the opening of the song on a loop a few times until you manage to find the first note. Once you find the first note, write it down.
