What were trench whistles used for?
The whistles were used to coordinate movements across companies. Commands for coordinated movements could be relayed down the trenches with greater efficiency. With the din of battle overpowering vocal commands, a sharp trill from the whistles was a better option.

Description. During WWI officers would blow a whistle and thousands of men would stream out of an attacking trench and run across No Man's Land into a hail of machine gun bullets and artillery fire from the enemy. This copy whistle is dated 1916, the year of the ill dated Somme campaign.
