The difference is: they are not the same at all, like you say in the triplets the length values are equal while the dotted example the 2 first notes are longer than the third!

What is a triplet quaver?

Quaver triplets (eighth notes) are the same, we take two of the notes in the triplet and add them together. So a quaver plus a quaver is equal to two quavers or a crotchet beat.
