Can you use instrument cables for powered speakers?
Since powered speakers or powered monitors are "powered", the cables are NOT passing current. So typically, depending on the speakers, you'll either need unbalanced mono cables (instrument cable or guitar cable) or a balanced TRS cable going from 1/4" TRS to XLR (or possibly a straight up XLR cable).
What cable goes from mixer to powered speaker?
The most common connection between mixer and powered speaker is a balanced or unbalanced line. The superior noise rejection of a balanced line allows long runs of cable between the mix station and the speakers without interference or noise. Most powered speakers have balanced XLR or TRS jacks, or both.
What type of cable does a speaker use?
Most systems will use 16, 14 or 12-gauge AWS wire. 16-gauge copper wire can run up to 48-feet with 8-ohm speakers. So, if you want a wire size that will suit most circumstances, then a 16-gauge copper wire is probably a good fit. For speakers with a lower impedance, then you might go with 12 or 14 AWG just to be safe.
