What is it called when you bounce your bow on your violin?

Spiccato [spikˈkaːto] is a bowing technique for string instruments in which the bow appears to bounce lightly upon the string. The term comes from the past participle of the Italian verb spiccare, meaning "to separate". The terms martelé, saltando, and sautillé describe similar techniques.

How many violin bow techniques are there?

In all bowing techniques without detaché, the violin remains on the string and you play the notes in their full length. In spiccato, you play a shorter length of the note and the bow leaves the string.
