Upstrokes: An upstroke (indicated with a V-shaped symbol) is played upward, toward the ceiling. Start from a position below the first string and drag your pick upward across the strings, from first to sixth. In an upstroke, you don't need to worry about hitting all the strings.

What is upstroke and downstroke?

Upstrokes are "lighter", and you hear the high notes first, and they are hit the hardest, which tend to dominate the sound. Downstrokes are more "closed", also hear them referred to as "meaner", and the lower notes tend to dominate the sound as they are hit the hardest.
