In terms of functional training, unstable surface training is a great tool to have at your disposal. It not only helps with dynamic balance and athletic performance, but it also helps with postural control.

Unstable surfaces make the exercises more difficult, but do not appear to increase the “over-load” sufficiently to increase the strength and power gains that are developed with traditional type exercises.
