How to Empty a Trumpet Spit Valve
- Hold the trumpet upright.
- Locate the spit valve. The spit valve is at the very bottom and front (closest to horn) of the trumpet.
- Tilt the trumpet forward so that the spit collects at the spit valve.
- Press the lever on the spit valve. The spit will pour from the trumpet.

Both the baritone saxophone and the sousaphone have “spit valves” on the underbellies of tubes for draining condensed moisture. In other words it takes a lot of hot air to play these wonderful instruments.
How can I make my saxophone sound less airy?
Try placing your reed higher or lower on the mouthpiece, and see if that makes a difference. Also make sure that the sides of the reed are aligned with the sides of the flat section of the mouthpiece. Failing to do so will cause air to leak out of the mouthpiece.
