Speakers should be at least 2-3 feet away from the nearest wall (especially if your speaker is in a corner). Many speakers have rear-facing bass ports. Positioning a rear bass port too close to the wall will reflect sound waves, resulting in time smearing.

How close is too close to speakers?
"To avoid an unwanted proximity effect, make sure the speakers are at least 3 feet (0.9 meter) away from listening positions, ideally 5 feet (1.5 meters) or more."
Can speakers be too far apart?
If the room is small, one cannot place the speakers too far apart. If the speakers are large, they won't sound too good if placed too close together. The five and a half feet probably applies to small to medium-sized speakers.
Where should speakers be placed in a room?
Speakers should be laid out so that they play along the length of the room. If you have a surround-sound system for your TV in mind, your chair or sofa should ideally be placed nearer the middle of the room and not too close to the back wall.
