What is a shorted pickup?

If the ohm meter goes to Zero (shorted circuit) when testing, there might be a short between the hot and ground connections or hot wires might be hitting a metal cover causing the pickup to short out. ... It can lead to ICPC (inner coil pole corrosion) and can eventually destroy the coil on single coil pickups.

How can you tell if a pickup is bad?

When a resistance reading is obtained on the meter, the pickup is functioning, the higher the reading, the better. If no reading is given, the pickups are probably faulty. Single pickups should give a reading near 10 ohms and humbucking pickups should read closer to 20 ohms.
