Both the baritone saxophone and the sousaphone have “spit valves” on the underbellies of tubes for draining condensed moisture. In other words it takes a lot of hot air to play these wonderful instruments.
Do saxophones have a spit valve?
Two types of saxophones—baritone and contrabass—have something else in common with brass instruments. Like trumpets and trombones, they have a spit valve. When you play a brass instrument, your breath will condense in the instrument. There, the water vapor in your breath cools.
Where is the spit valve?
The spit valve is at the very bottom and front (closest to horn) of the trumpet.
Where does the air come out of a saxophone?
Adolphe Sax. Sound on a woodwind instrument comes from a vibrating column of air inside the instrument. The player makes this column of air vibrate in one of three ways: as air is blown across the top of an instrument (like the flute), across a single reed (like the clarinet), or across two reeds (like the oboe).
