Raising bench height

As well as the distance between your benchtops, you should consider raising them. Commonly, kitchen benches are at a height of 900 millimetres but for taller people, this has become a painful height. Raising it by 20 to 50 millimetres can dramatically improve your kitchen ergonomics, especially if the cook is tall.

The evenness of the floor also needs to be taken into account; however most kitchen benches should be between 850mm to 1050mm, with the most common height being 900mm (which is a good fit for most under-bench appliances). Taller or shorter families are likely to benefit from having a raised or lowered benchtop.

The easier way to raise the countertop height is to raise the entire base cabinet, because the only cosmetic change this requires is a wider toe kick.
