What is a passing note on piano?

Passing notes are literally just that – notes that you pass through on your way to more important notes. They are generally played quickly. We learned in a previous lesson that the strongest sounding notes are the chord tones. For example, playing C, E, G or B over a CMaj7 chord will sound very harmonically strong.

What is unaccented passing notes?

Unaccented passing notes fall between the chords. They are the most common type of passing note. Accented passing notes fall on the beat, pushing the chord note off the beat. They are less common.

What are chromatic passing notes?

These two chromatic passing notes form a diminished 7th chord in combination with the sustained G and E from the C major chord. This can be described as a chromatic passing chord. It arises totally out of voice leading, rather than as a result of a change of harmony.
