The reed exercise involves rolling the reed and lips in and out (at the same rate) to create three different pitches (no instrument needed). The control and pitch accuracy comes primarily from rolling the lips/reed in and out, as well as air speed and pressure, not so much from jaw pressure.

How do I strengthen my oboe embouchure?

To Improve your embouchure when you are not actively practicing you should periodically flex the key muscles in short bursts to really train the muscle memory. Holding a pencil by the end in your mouth like you would a reed can help train the muscles you use to play.

What is special about the oboe reed?

The two reeds are curved subtly, and so there is a slight gap in the center when the two ends are stuck together. This allows the player's breath to pass through. During play, the reeds undergo minute vibrations, the gap between the reeds repeatedly closing and opening.
