A good starting place is to set the singer 6 inches away from the mic, and then move them forward or backward to get the tone you're looking for. Hot tip: Don't put your vocalist closer than 5 inches away. Things can get too muddy real fast. However, for dynamic mics a good place to start is 2 inches away.

Where should I place my microphone for vocals?
If you are pressed for time, you will have to resort to your go-to position. My go-to microphone position is slightly above lip level, pointing slightly downward, at about 6 inches away. In general, it's best to bit a bit further away from the microphone when using a cardioid condenser microphone.
What is the best mic position?
Your mic should be as close to your mouth as possible in order to only pick up the sound of you voice, and not the other sounds of the room. A good rule of thumb is to have the mic positioned about 6-12 inches away from your mouth.
What angle should microphone be?
Positioning. When performing live, the microphone should sit at about chin level and be tilted up towards your mouth and noise. It should not be at a 90 degree angle with the stand coming straight at your mouth.
What direction should my mic be?
Once you find the sweet spot, place the cardioid mic with its capsule pointing perpendicular to your palm toward the sound source. This is effective with all cardioid-type mics and works fairly well with bidirectional mics as well.
