Can there be an octave between tenor and alto?
Sometimes the inner voices jump around, and sometimes they just noodle around two or three pitches for days on end. As for the distance between the voices themselves, most tend to settle on never having any more than an octave between the soprano/alto and the alto/tenor.
How far apart are tenor and alto?
Using proper spacing (open position)
Adjacent upper voices are not allowed to be more than an octave apart. (The bass, however, can wander freely away from the other voices.) Students often mess this up when writing in open position. Tenor and alto are more than an 8ve apart.
How much space can be between tenor and bass?
If there is a large gap it should be between the bass and the tenor parts. You should follow these two basic guidelines: in each phrase the gap between tenor and soprano must be no more than a 12th (an octave and a fifth) at any point and less than an octave at some point *
