If we consider a basic 8 or 9 note handpan; the way the instrument is tuned overcomes the biggest obstacle in learning most other instruments. No matter which notes you hit, it is actually quite hard to hit a 'bum' note that doesn't go with the one played previously, or indeed the next note you will play.
How long does it take to learn handpan?
Becoming a 'good' handpan player can be achieved in as little as 20 hours of practice. Surprising to some, if you learn and practice in the right way, and take some handpan lessons for beginners, those 20 hours will be the most important time of your handpan playing life. You don't even need the own the best handpan.
Why are handpans so expensive?
– A good quality handpan is neither mass-produced nor quick to produce. Mostly made to order, a handpan is crafted by highly skilled creators to your own specification. With very few skilled manufacturers in the world, demand is high and supply low. That is why handpans cost so much.
Are handpans worth it?
There is no doubt that someone could purchase a cheaper handpan and be very happy with the sound. They may get many hours of happiness of playing it and never have a concern or even awareness that it is poorer quality than those that have gone before it.
