How do you train yourself to breathe with your diaphragm?

Sit comfortably, with your knees bent and your shoulders, head and neck relaxed. Place one hand on your upper chest and the other just below your rib cage. This will allow you to feel your diaphragm move as you breathe. Breathe in slowly through your nose so that your stomach moves out against your hand.

What is diaphragmatic breathing good for?

Diaphragmatic breathing (also called "abdominal breathing" or "belly breathing") encourages full oxygen exchange — that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, this type of breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure.

Why can't I breathe with my diaphragm?

Muscle dysfunction

If the diaphragm cannot function correctly, it may not be able to move to allow the lungs to expand fully. This can cause difficulty breathing and may cause the lungs to only partially expand when a person takes a breath.

How do you breathe from your stomach?

Belly breathing

Put one hand on your belly just below your ribs and the other hand on your chest. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and let your belly push your hand out. Your chest should not move. Breathe out through pursed lips as if you were whistling.
