Spray a fine mist of acrylic clear coat over the autographed area. One coat of the protective spray will work fine. Allow the clear coat to dry before playing or moving the guitar. If the guitar has already been signed with a permanent marker or sharpie, use a clear nitrocellulose lacquer to preserve the signature.

Spray a nonacetone-based clear coat spray to autographed sports memorabilia, guitars or other items that won't be worn or washed to add a protective coating. Place the item on a solid surface, hold the can 12 to 14 inches away, and depress the trigger lightly for a few seconds.

You can spray any finish over a sharpie. If you are brushing you have to be careful not to use a finish with strong solvent like shellac or lacquer. The solvents in the finish would drag the sharpie when you passed a brush over it. It would be safe to brush a water based polyurethane.

Use a dry iron (no steam) and keep the iron flat over the signature for at least one minute. Do not rub which could smear the ink, but lift the iron up and down over the signature while applying firm pressure to prevent scorching. If you don't have an iron, toss the signed fabric into the dryer.
