Place a bar number either at the beginning of each line or every ten bars; you don't need to number each bar. Count the beginning of each measure. Do not count any partial measure at the start of a movement. Always check the number of beats in the first bar to be sure.
How do you know how many measures are in a song?
By simple counting. If a song is in 4/4, which covers many, many songs, listen to the beats. Each bar will have a count of four, then a slightly emphasised note heralding the start of the next bar. So, count four for as many times it takes to go from the beginning to the end of a line, that's how many bars long it is.
How do you calculate beats in music?
Count in compound time.
In compound time, divide the top number by 3 to get the number of beats in a bar. The units of the beats are found in the bottom number. For example, in 6/8 time, there are 2 beats per measure, and each beat lasts 3 eighth notes, or a dotted quarter note.
