Mineral oil is inexpensive, will not go bad, and is readily available at most pharmacies. So if you want a cheap and virtually identical alternative to commercial fretboard oil, try using mineral oil instead of olive oil. It's best to just wipe down your fret board with a damp clean cotton cloth.

Buy a bottle of mineral oil at the grocery store. With all the strings off the tuners and stuffed into the sound hole, apply some oil on a folded paper towel and wipe it on the face of the fingerboard. It's fine to wipe it on the frets.
