How does a Rickenbacker sound?

It has a lot of crackle and Treble. Personally, i greatly dislike it and prefer a deep rich tone, but ive played the rick, and it's not for me, and i think you should head to your local store and try it for yourself. I don't particularly care for the Ric tone, but it sure is a unique one.

The short answer to your question is no.......they do not have to be hard to play. As suggested by others in this thread a good setup should eliminate any issues that you may be experiencing. I have been playing Rickenbacker guitars since 1965 and in particular their 12 string guitars since 1966.

How do you describe the tone of a guitar?

Crisp - clear with edge, bright, raw, but not unpleasant. Dark - covered up, more extreme than warm in regards to brightness, no edge. Throaty - thick with depth and growl. Nasally - dominant mids, overpowering the bass and treble.
