As you have discovered, you can play guitar without using your pinkie, but doing so will limit you to a great extent and certain chord voicings cannot be played without using the pinkie. Therefore I would strongly encourage you to begin incorporating the use of your pinkie into your playing.

The pinkie is responsible for everything played above and beyond the notes in the power chord. To give your pinkie a workout on this type of passage, play FIGURE 1, moving it down the neck one fret at a time with each repeat, till your fingers reach their maximum comfortable stretching point.
Should you anchor your pinky when playing guitar?
Anchoring your pinky or ring finger is fine. Anchoring your palm & whole arm is fine. Just having a free floating arm & hand is also fine! Guitarists have developed clean, smooth, efficient picking with any & all of those.
