Can you add a speaker to a combo amp?
To use it as a combo, simply plug a speaker cable between the head and cab. You can plug the amplifier section into a different speaker cab (just make sure the impedance matches!) Or you can plug a different amplifier into the speaker cab (again, match the impedance!)

Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212 IV Combo Valve Amplifier
The Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212 IV Combo Valve Amplifier is easily one of the best combo amps for gigging ever crafted and the smaller size makes it ideal for around the home, too.
Can you run an amp head through a combo?
You can only, ONLY hook up an amp head to a combo amp if your combo uses a dedicated speaker cable from the speaker to the speaker output on your combo head. Just unplug that speaker cable from the combo cabinet into the separate amp head's speaker output. ANYTHING BESIDES THAT WILL NOT WORK.
Can you play live with a combo amp?
Yes, many folks play live with combos. I personally prefer head/cab since it has a tighter low end for rock and metal.
