STANDARD GUITAR NOTATION Notes are written in alphabetical order from A to G. The duration of a note is determined by three things: the note head, stem, and flag. A whole note (see below) equals four beats. A half note is half of that: two beats.
Why is guitar Tab bad?
The bias against tabs comes from the fact that most people just use tabs to learn a song really quickly so that they can play it, show off to their friends, etc. The reason this is frowned upon is because when you do it this way you're not really learning anything. All you're learning is how to play that song.
How do you know which fret is from the staff notation?
A numeral followed by “fr.” (e.g., 3fr.) to the right indicates what fret the shape begins on. An x above a string means that the string is muted so that it doesn't sound. Numbers under the strings indicate what fingers should hold each fret, and are relatively rare.
