How thick should the tapa be on a Cajon?
Wood for a Cajon Tapa. Most cajón builders use plywood for the tapa, 2.5 to 3mm thick. 4mm is sometimes recommended but I think that's a bit thick unless the box is bigger than usual. 5-ply hardwood plywood is often recommended but I've made great sounding tapas from 3-ply plywood.
Can a Cajon replace a drum kit?
The playing technique is different than for a full drum set, so it will probably not work as a "training kit" before you get your hand on a drum set. But if you are just looking for a rhythmic instrument that can provide a wide variety of rhythmic sounds in a band, the Cajon will probably be a good alternative.
