Inhale through the mouth or nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 8 seconds, exhale in a slow and controlled manner, hold your exhaled breath for 8 seconds. Please note, when you 'hold' your breath there should be no tension – the throat should be relaxed as though in a surprised position.

Learn to Sing: Breathing

  1. Breathe deeply from your lower lungs - imagine a rubber ring around your waist (your diaphragm)
  2. Breathe in and try to push the ring outwards.
  3. Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose and mouth.
  4. Avoid raising your shoulders as you breathe in - keep them relaxed and level.
  5. Relax!

Why do I run out of breath when singing?

Singing without the chest voice quality usually results in a breathy, weak sound because of the lack of vocal fold engagement.
