Do songs need key changes?
ADVICE: The most common places for key changes are at the change between verse and chorus, or in final repeats of a chorus. Most songs don't need a key change. And in fact, since key changes result in rather distinctive moments, they can sound predictable and hackneyed if used too often.
Why are key changes used?
A less scrutinized use of direct modulation in a song is for the bridge. A sudden change to a new key helps make the bridge feel like an exciting launch into a new section, which is different than repeating yourself only slightly higher.
