Strings for drop g tuning

For reference, I like 9.5-56 to 10-58/60 on a 27 inch scale 7 string tuned from Drop A down to Drop G, so I'd probably recommend 12-64 or 13-70 for you. People need to stop being wusses, a low 80 should do the trick for G. Lee Malia did it on a Les Paul.

Can you tune a 6-string to drop G?

Think of only the 6-string tuning when going between 6- and 7-strings. On a 6-string guitar, you would start from A Standard and go down to Drop G; on a 7-string, you would start with D-Standard (with the 7-string tuned to an A, like between the top 2 strings) and go down to Drop G.

What bands use drop G tuning?

Drop G tuning has been most commonly found in heavy genres of music, creating a dark, foreboding sound. While drop B tuning has been favored by heavy metal bands such as Slipknot, bands that fall into the categories of hardcore, grindcore, death metal, and doom metal are the provinces of drop G tuning.

Do you need thicker strings for lower tunings?

As we mentioned earlier, lower tunings like Drop D will work better with a set of heavier strings. It's a good idea to use a 10-52 set in this tuning, which is often referred to as a “heavy bottom” set of strings because the string gauge is increased for the three lower strings.
