Hand-stopping is a technique by which a natural horn can be made to produce notes outside of its normal harmonic series. By inserting the hand, cupped, into the bell, the player can reduce the pitch of a note by a semitone or more.

How do you stop your fingers from being horned?
The basic rule often given for fingering stopped notes on the horn is to finger the note a half step below the note you want to play, close the bell tightly with the right hand, and play only on the F horn for intonation. As you slowly close the hand in the bell the pitch will get lower.
What hand is using for stopping?
Stopping/braking
To indicate that you're about to slow, extend your right arm fully out to the side, palm-down, and move your hand up and down at the wrist. To indicate coming to a full stop, extend your right arm vertically, with palm facing forward [note that the latter is not a legally recognised signal].
Which horn player was credited with inventing the hand stopping technique for natural horn?
To solve the problem of range on the horn, A.J. Hampel (another German) invented a technique called hand stopping. When horn players used their hands to partially or fully close the bell, the pitch was altered in such a way that diatonic scales could be produced over a wider range.

This is the act of fully closing off the bell of the instrument with either the right hand or a special stopping mute. This results in producing a somewhat nasal sound.
