We use a new tool called the dotted half note to count three beats. The dotted half note looks like a normal half note, except that it has a small dot on the right side next to the note head. Dotted notes add ½ of the original note value to the note.

How many counts is a dotted half note?
You may wonder, “Why aren't any of the notes held for three beats?” Wonder no more! If you add a dot after the note head, you add half of the note value to the base note. So a dotted half note is held for two counts plus one more count (half of two), for a total of three beats.
How many counts are half notes?
In 4/4 time a whole note gets FOUR beats; a half note gets TWO beats, and a quarter note gets ONE beat.
How many beats is dotted half rest?
A dot after a rest adds half the value of that rest. For example, a dotted half rest will receive 3 beats. That is because a half rest receives 2 beats, half of 2 is 1, and 2 plus 1 is 3.
How do you count dotted notes?
A dot written after a note adds one-half of the note's value to the original note's value. A quarter note equals one beat. A dot after the quarter note adds ½ beat (½ of the original value). A dotted quarter note equals 1½ beats.
