Why do I close one eye when I read?
This coordinated movement is called convergence. It helps you do close work like reading or using a phone. Convergence insufficiency is a problem with this movement. The condition causes one or both eyes to drift outward when you look at something close by.
Does your brain favor one eye?
The eye changes the light that hits it into nerve signals. These signals travel along the optic nerve to the brain. In amblyopia, the brain favors signals from one eye over the other.
Can people with one eye read?
Having only one good eye does not strain the good eye at all. But when you read, you may only be able to read for perhaps 15 minutes before developing tired achy eyes, or headache.
Where should your eyes be when reading?

A healthy reading distance is about 15 inches, whilst the optimum reading angle is 60 degrees. For wearers of bifocals, this will be slightly lower. Your eyes have to focus upwards when you read lying down and reading at this angle can cause eyestrain when it happens over a sustained period of time.
