A 1x12 cab will mean that you will only need to switch one speaker to experiment as opposed to 2x12s or 4x12s where you probably will end up switching more than one. at the same time, you can isolate individual speakers in 1x12 cabs and be able to hear obvious differences in your sound with that one speaker.
