A good scale or arpeggio is one of the most difficult things to play on the piano so they can help you develope the fine motor control you need for performing repertoire well.

What is an arpeggio scale?

Arpeggios can be thought of as broken chords, or as scales with certain notes skipped out. Think of the scale you just learned with its 8 notes and skip the notes 2, 4, 6 and 7, and you have an arpeggio. In other words, you play notes 1, 3, 5 and 8 (8 is the same note as 1 but an octave higher).

Can arpeggios go down?

Unlike scales that contain some extra notes not always played in chords, arpeggios use only the notes found in a single chord. Both scales and arpeggios can be played in ascending, descending or random order.
